VAMPIRE FACELIFT

Despite the off putting name, the vampire facelift has become very popular. Also known as a “platelet-rich fibrin matrix”, a vampire facelift is a cosmetic procedure used to give patients a more youthful appearance. Although it has recently become popular in pop culture, the procedure has been around in the United States since 2009.

Rather than other facial cosmetic procedures, the vampire facelift does not remove excess skin surgically or inject chemicals into the body. Instead, this outpatient procedure uses the patient’s own blood to fill deep lines and wrinkles. Because of the use of blood as the filler, it has been playfully deemed as the “vampire” facelift.

During the cosmetic procedure, the doctor will draw a small amount of blood from the patient’s arm. After collecting blood, it is run through a centrifuge which separates the platelets. Then, the platelets are injected into the patient’s facial tissue to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Occasionally, the blood is mixed with other fillers for better results.

If you are wanting a more youthful look but don’t have weeks to recover from a cosmetic surgery, consider getting a vampire facelift. You will see similar results without the invasive treatment. The physician only extracts 2 teaspoons of blood and injects the platelets back into the body.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA

Platelets are cells found within the make up of blood. The platelets bind together when they sense damaged blood vessels. This is why when you get a cut, the platelets bind to the damaged blood vessel causing a blood clot. Platelets allow the bleeding to stop and begin the healing process.

While platelets are found naturally in the body, they are being used to treat many different medical conditions. Physicians use Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to treat patients with needs ranging from aesthetic cosmetic procedures to injury healing. By using PRP, desired results can be achieved without the time, risk or cost of surgery.

MAJOR JOINT INJECTIONS

This outpatient procedure is done to relieve pain throughout the body, specifically in major joints such as the hip or shoulder. Patients who experience regular pain may be considered for the procedure. If the joints experience regular pain, arthritis, injury or mechanical stress an injection could quickly ease the pain. Not only does the injection help relieve the pain but it also is used to diagnose the direct cause of the pain.

By numbing the area in which the procedure will be taking place, the physician will be able to determine source of the pain. If immediate relief is experienced upon numbing, the joint is likely to the source of the pain and they can go through with the procedure. Along with the initial numbing medication administered before the major joint injection, a time-release cortisone is injected into joint to reduce inflammation and provide further pain relief.
